Don’t let bad breath have an impact on your self-confidence
The main cause of bad breath (or halitosis) is the bacteria that live in our mouth. The bacteria feed on the food debris that accumulates in between our teeth, tongue and mouth, which then releases a sulphur compound that is responsible for the bad odour.
Factors such as smoking, drinking, diabetes and digestive disorders can also contribute to bad breath.
Eliminate bad breath
At our dental practice based in Sherwood, we recommend brushing your teeth and tongue twice a day using fluoride toothpastes, as well as flossing every day to remove debris and bacteria from the surfaces of your teeth that cannot be reached by brushing alone. Other tips for attaining fresh breath include:
- Drinking plenty of water
- Chewing sugar free gum after meals
- Not smoking
- Eating a well-balanced diet
- Regular professional cleans at the dentist.
It is important to visit our dental practice every 6 months for a professional clean and to allow our dentists to check for signs of gum disease, tooth decay and dry mouth, which can all contribute to bad breath.
