Tooth Extraction

At Jansz Dental, one of our primary goals is to help our patients maintain their natural teeth for as long as possible. However, there are some circumstances in which a tooth becomes unsalvageable due to trauma, fracture, or infection. When this happens, the best course of action is to remove the source of infection.

These are the situations in which Dr Jansz might recommend a tooth extraction:

  • For a tooth with decay beyond what we can restore with a crown
  • For an infected tooth that can’t be saved with root canal treatment
  • When advanced gum disease has rendered a tooth unsalvageable due to infection or bone loss
  • For a tooth that is cracked, decayed, damaged or fractured beyond repair
  • When wisdom teeth (third molars) are causing concern

Our dentists only recommend tooth extraction after exhausting all other treatment options. When we do recommend it, our team goes above and beyond to ensure your comfort and ease during your procedure.

How Tooth Extraction Can Benefit Your Oral Health

While it doesn’t feel great to lose a tooth, removing unhealthy teeth does offer several benefits for your smile and dental health.
Pain Relief
Removing an infected tooth can eliminate the pain and discomfort it causes.
Eliminates Impaction
Removing an impacted tooth or a third molar helps prevent infection.
Protects Neighbouring Teeth
Removing a problematic tooth often protects surrounding teeth from damage.
Prevents Infection from Spreading
Extracting an infected tooth prevents the infection from spreading to other teeth or to critical areas of your body.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wisdom teeth, which are the four adult molars that typically emerge in your late teens or early twenties, do not always cause problems. Some people have enough room in their jaw to accommodate them comfortably, and in these cases, extraction is not necessary. However, for many patients, wisdom teeth do cause issues, and removing them is the safest and most sensible course of action.

When We Recommend Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Your dentist may recommend wisdom tooth extraction if they are:

  • Impacted, meaning they are unable to fully emerge and are trapped beneath the gum or against neighbouring teeth
  • Growing at an angle that is pushing against or damaging the adjacent molar
  • Partially erupted, creating an area of gum tissue that traps food debris and bacteria and leads to repeated infection
  • Developing decay or gum disease that is difficult or impossible to treat due to its position
  • Associated with a cyst or other abnormality that requires attention

On the other hand, wisdom teeth that have fully emerged, are properly aligned, and are easy to clean may not need to be removed at all. Regular monitoring through routine check-ups and x-rays allows your dentist to keep a close eye on your development over time and act promptly if the situation changes.

It is also worth noting that not everyone develops all four wisdom teeth, and some people never develop them at all. Every patient's situation is different, which is why a personalised assessment is so important. Contact us on (07) 3278 6111 to book an appointment and put your mind at ease.

Understanding Tooth Extraction at Jansz Dental

We follow these steps when recommending and performing a tooth extraction procedure at our dental clinic:

  • The initial evaluation — Our dentists review your situation and current needs during your evaluation. We recommend a tooth extraction when no other appropriate treatment options remain.
  • Applying a dental anaesthetic — On the day of your procedure, our dentists will use a local anaesthetic to numb your tooth and the surrounding tissues so you don’t feel anything during your extraction procedure.
  • Gentle extraction— Our dentists are experienced in comfortably removing teeth. If your case is more complex, they may refer you to a trusted oral surgeon.
  • A smooth recovery process — Our team is here to support you through the entire tooth extraction process, including your recovery. We’ll provide detailed instructions on caring for your tooth during recovery, and we’re here to answer any questions or address any concerns.
