What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment has something of an undeserved reputation. For many people, the phrase alone is enough to cause anxiety, yet the reality is that modern root canal treatment is a routine procedure that relieves pain rather than causes it. Our dentists take great care to ensure every patient feels comfortable and well-informed before, during and after their treatment.

Root canal treatment is recommended when the pulp or nerve inside your tooth becomes infected or inflamed. This can happen as a result of:

  • Deep decay that has reached the inner chamber of the tooth
  • A crack or fracture that has allowed bacteria to enter
  • A damaged or leaking filling that has left the tooth vulnerable
  • Trauma to the tooth, even if no visible crack or damage is present
  • A severe or repeated infection that has not responded to other treatment

What Happens When You Don't Treat a Tooth Infection?

Left untreated, an infected tooth can cause significant pain, lead to abscess formation, and ultimately result in tooth loss. Root canal treatment allows your dentist to save the natural tooth rather than extract it, which is always the preferred outcome wherever possible.

During the procedure, your dentist will:

  • Administer a local anaesthetic to ensure you are completely comfortable throughout
  • Remove the inflamed pulp from inside the tooth
  • Thoroughly clean and shape the canals to eliminate any remaining bacteria
  • Fill and seal the canals to prevent reinfection
  • Place a crown or filling over the tooth to restore its strength and function

Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how manageable the experience is. With excellent home care and routine dental check-ups, root canal treatment can potentially last a lifetime.
